MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Wood-Rose College Preparatory is to develop knowledgeable and virtuous leaders who live the “Gift of Self.”

PHILOSOPHY
Brief Introduction:

The mission of Wood-Rose College Preparatory is to develop knowledgeable and virtuous leaders who live the “Gift of Self.” Wood-Rose College Preparatory defines “Gift of Self” as service to others members of society through virtuous leadership by example.  The Gift of Self idea derives from Christian Personalism, a philosophy perfected by Pope John Paul II.  If man realizes that true happiness comes from his conscious effort to serve others through a sincere ‘gift of self,’ then, he can express his love for his fellow man and experience love himself.  At Wood-Rose College Preparatory a special emphasis is placed on mirroring the hidden life of Jesus Christ, perfect God and perfect Man and the Holy Family as supreme models of individual and family life, and serving each student as a reflection of Christ Himself. It is the goal of Wood-Rose College Preparatory to teach this philosophy of the ‘gift of self’ to its entire community by the example of its teachers, board members, parents and students.

Expected School-wide Learning Results (ESLRs) Our expected school-wide learning results (ESLR) concern the following categories:
1) knowledge, 2) virtue, and 3) leadership.

1) Knowledgeable. Wood-Rose College Preparatory defines “knowledgeable” as: a student who pursues academic excellence through demonstrated competence in at least one academic subject and confidence in all others.

Firstly, in 2006-2007 school year we will initiate testing to assess the overall strengths and weaknesses of each individual student.  Secondly, it is the role of the teachers to recognize and enhance the God-given talent(s) that each student has to develop to his or her fullest potential.  Finally, standardized testing is an essential component of all students at Wood-Rose College Preparatory.  All sophomores and juniors test their skills against the rest of the nation in their peer group on the PSAT.  All juniors and seniors take the SAT or ACT at least once in the year.  We also assess our students with other national exams by participating in the National Mathematics Competition and National Latin Exam.

We are proud of our students and the progress of our school administration’s ability to develop our curriculum still further.  We couple a rigorous science and math curriculum with a broad study of the classics in the humanities.  This unique combination  synthesizes the best of the traditional classical education (including the study of Latin) with the morphing developments in science and math.  Currently, we have 16 of our classes approved by the University of California.  We offer five advanced placement classes:  AP English Language, AP English Literature, AP Calculus, AP U.S. History and AP Biology.  We hope to expand our advanced placement Advanced Placement curriculum to include AP Latin next year, among other courses.

With regard to our physical education curriculum, this past school year of 2005-2006 we modeled, trained and tested our students performance based upon the Presidential Fitness Challenge. The standard physical education program consists of 3 hours for per week for freshmen and sophomores.  For two years now, we have had a Boys Basketball team that has participated in non-league games against local teams.  We hope to begin a golf team, a tennis team and team in 2006-2007.

Separately, we are a member of the National Association of Private Catholic and Independent Schools and a candidate for accreditation with the Western Association of Colleges and Schools.

            2) Virtue: The mission of Wood-Rose College Preparatory is to develop knowledgeable and virtuous leaders.  Character development is the most important component of our education.  “Virtue classes” are taught once a week throughout the entire academic year for the sake of educating the students on the theoretical and practical applications of virtue in everyday life.

            3) Leadership. We define leadership as acts of the “Gift of Self” through service to others in the community.

The ultimate objective is to train and equip each student, building on knowledge of his or her own particular and unique set of talents, to discern his or her lifetime vocation.  Each student will have the opportunity to serve our community with their “Community Service Hours” as part of their diploma requirements for the school.
