Latin II
UC Approved

Pre-requisites:  Latin I
Textbooks: Jenney’s First Year Latin, By C. Jenney, Jr. (Prentice Hall, 1990) & Jenney’s Second Year Latin, by C. Jenney, Jr., E. C. Baade, D. D. Coffin, R. V. Schudder (Prentice Hall, 1990)

The students in this course are introduced to the subjective mood and all its attendant uses and various other grammatical elements including the gerund and gerundive, conditional clauses, and additional case usages.  The book contains numerous passages of connected Latin prose which narrate the founding of the city of Rome written according to the reading level of the students.  These are supplemented by the teacher with readings from classical authors and items illustrating Roman culture.  The aim is to improve students reading of Latin texts and to prepare them for reading Caesar’ De Bello Gallico, and other classical authors in Latin III.  The course begins with a review of the material from Latin I, but quickly moves on to new concepts.  The main new concept will be the subjunctive.
