Pre-requisites: none Textbook: Jenney’s First Year Latin, By C. Jenney, Jr.(Prentice Hall, 1990)
The Sage Hill Latin I course provides students with a basic understanding of the rudiments of the Latin language. It will give each student a strong foundation in grammar, syntax, and vocabulary and it will emphasize the development of a clear and coherent understanding of the overall structure of the language. Students will learn all five noun declensions and the four verb conjugations in both the indicative and imperative, moods, and they will develop a facility with translation and analysis of sentences incorporating adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. Emphasis will be placed on comprehension, and the course will supplement grammar and syntax with regular work on vocabulary, especially the mastery of Latin stems found in English and the derivatives incorporating them. In addition to language work, students will also explore the fundamental elements of Roman culture and history, specifically, names, mythology, games and entertainment, road and technology, architecture, and government.
