Knights have traditionally stood for chivalry and virtue - as in the knights of old.  We are also reminded of the Christian knights of the crusades who defended the faithful in the Holy Land.

The Shield is a symbol of preparedness.  What we teach and how we teach is to prepare our students to defend not only themselves, but their beliefs and indeed all Truth in today's world.  The shield is golden in color.  Gold is a precious metal - we use the precious Truth given to us to our noble defense.

The Cross is of course a symbol of Our Lord's suffering and death, the supreme "gift of self" where God himself gives himself in sacrifice for the redemption of Man.  It is colored brown for the wood of the Cross. It is leaning slightly to remind us that we are also carrying our own cross, because as scripture says: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" Mt 17:24. This is the "Wood" in our name.

There are 3 roses in honor of the Trinity - God in 3 persons. Roses have also been important in the lives of many saints who have had a devotion to Our Lady, The Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the same rose combination in the symbol of Wood Rose Academy , the school from which we owe much of our philosophy and vision.

"Virtus" is Latin for Virtue.  The living a life of virtue is one of our school's central philosophies.  "Caritas" is Latin for Love, as in the Love God has for us and we strive for in our daily life.  It is the reason one makes a "Gift of Self".

"Veritas" is Latin for Truth.  This is the reason for education, for us to learn and learn to act on the Truth.  In a society where all is relative, we recognize the existence of absolute Truth.  We will teach this to our students.

Latin is an ancient language used in educated circles for centuries.  It is also the language of the Catholic Church.  We teach Latin to broaden the mind, develop linguistic competence, and provide access to classic literature.
