The AP U.S. History course is a highly intensive course with college-level difficulty in the content, format and rigor of its assessment methods. The American History text by Alan Brinkley provides extensive historical details coupled with abstract theories requiring explication and elaboration by the instructor. Incorporated into the course are supplementary reading materials, such as Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, Alexis de Toqueville’s Democracy in America amount others. The structure of class time revolves around lectures essay exams, AP test samples, periodic formal debates and a portion of an occasional documentary video or movie. All of these components focus on preparation for success on the AP U.S. History exam in May of each year.
