AP Biology

Pre-requisites:  Chemistry and Physics
Textbook: Biology – Cambell and Reece

Advanced Placement Biology is a one year course designed to be the equivalent of an introductory College Biology course taken by biology course taken by biology majors as Freshmen.  It aims to provide students with conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing science of biology.

It includes topics covered in a college course for majors or in the syllabus from a high quality college introductory biology program.  The textbooks used are those used by college biology majors and the labs done by AP students are those equivalent of those done by college students as designed by the College Board.

Topics include biological chemistry, cytology, genetics, heredity, evolution, structure and function of plants and animals, taxonomy, botany, zoology, ecology and populations.  Topics are treated in depth and students will do extensive lab work and extra readings at a college level.

Students will be encouraged to attend at least one lecture/workshops sponsored by a scientific society or organization such as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, etc., and visit laboratories related to the topics being discussed.
